The HPE Smart Array P440ar Controller seems to easily handle the scenario you need. Also, remember that SSD power consumption is lower than SAS HDD, so you will be automatically saving many amps and wattage, in few words your P440ar Controller will easily manage your load of RAID10 with up to 8 Drives. SSD's are about 6x as efficient as HDD's and use about 5.5 watts less power under a typical server load. The way I understand it is that I would probably want to enable the SSD drives internal cache and disable the controllers 2GB of battery backed cache, but this action makes me worry about power failure and data loss (although the server room has good UPS's and a generator in case of SOL failure). Is this a valid worry or will the HP drives be smart enough to power down safely (cause HPE 1000$+/Drive magic)? The 2GB Battery backed cache should not be disabled, that handles the config, setup and structure of your RAID controller, is not intended to cache the Data processing, is a very different thing. I would like to know if anyone else can confirm that using drive caching instead of controller caching is the main configuration change required that may throttle performance. I also am curious if just using the controller cache would heavily impact performance? I appreciate any and all input on this subjectWill update once complete and thanks in advance for any help.
As I mentioned before, the HPE Smart Array P440 Cache feature is not intended to cache data, just to save the config you have running with the raid drives as global or block structure.
You may want to enable cache, if you are using VMWare I would like to recommend to use the CACHE config from VMWare.

Thinking globally in the infrastructure you have, would be great to understand how much amount of RAM you have installed, RAM Frequency and Config, CPU family, quantity and speed, the amount of data/processing load you will put on your server to better size the need or not to enable Cache.
Easy, having SSD´s you have the speed of 50 HDD´s per each SSD (am talking about I/O per second) and having an array the highway of data will be wide and fastest than before with RAID 60 with HDDS (LoL).
BUT, if needed, In case of several HIGH need of cache, I would setup my Server with the config of one set of RAID 10 (6 SSD units) and other set of RAID1 (2 SSD units) to have two different arrays.
In that way, through VMWare I would totally use and dedicate the Array-B to cache purposes, as This thread describes:

In below screenshot, I benchmarked 3 machines, 4 Drives. my main production based on DL580, HPE 1.92TB SATA 6G Mixed Use SFF SSD RAID 1. MySQL insert time of 1 million rows is ~ 30 seconds in the SSD, while its ~ 15 seconds in the ImageServer 20TB 7200 RPM RAID 5!! How the hell this is possible? The SSD cost me ~ USD 2300 , I am really shocked, all firmwares and drivers up to date, and OS is Windows 2012 R2. Is this known or expected?! if not, then share your insight. Update 1:re-benchmark SSD after enabling write cache in the smart array didn't do anything as below screenshots highlight! do i need to reboot after enabling write cache? Finally: All Smart Arrays GUI, In Controller Hardware Information Section showed: Upgrade Hpe Smart Array P440ar Controller Driver Windows 10Negotiated PCIe Data Rate: PCIe 3.0 x8 (7880 MB/s) Putting all that together, it seems SAS HDD out performed the SSD with the help of the smart array cache and RAID 5. I couldn't find Max Seq WRITE Throughput for the SAS HDD, Does anyone know? Maybe it can be calculated using the benchmark results: Example: in case of the 4 X 300 GB SAS HDD: Seq WRITE Throughput (MiB/s) Benchmarked as: 5782 Divide 5782 By 4 (number of disks) = 1445.5 MiB/s But Since smart array Max is 1200 MB/S, I guess my calcs missing something! I suppose that your P840 has at least 2 GB of write back cache, which totally absorbs CrystalDisk's workload and cached a good chunk of the MySQL one. Moreover, I suppose that your P830i has smaller cache (1 GB?) To enhance the performance of your SSDs, you can enable their internal cache (via the RAID controller's utility), but be sure to completely understand the possible data loss ramification of this choice. Give a look here for more information. Finally, consider that you are comparing a 2-disk RAID1 with a 12-disks RAID5 array..
